Fumigation is a method of using toxic gas to eliminate pests within an enclosed space. Fumigation are carried out basically by using Methyl Bromide. There are two methods of perform fumigation. One is to seal the structure with plastic or tape and other sealing materials and the other one is by enclose the structure in a tent of vinyl- coated nylon tarpaulins.
The span of the time required for fumigation takes from 24 hours for Methyl Bromide fumigation; to 7 up to 21 days for Aluminum Phosphide fumigation depending on the level of infestation, temperature, moisture content, size, type of commodity and other factors.
ISPM 15 is an International Standard Phytosanitary Measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), that addresses the need to treat wood materials, such as pallets, which are used to ship products between countries. ISPM 15 requires that pallets be either chemically fumigated or heat treated to prevent the spread of wood and plant pests.
ISPM 15 was developed to address the global spread of timber pests by regulating the movement of timber packaging and dunnage in international trade. ISPM 15 describes Phytosanitary measures to reduce the spread of quarantine pests associated with timber packaging material.
ISPMs are recognized as the basis for Phytosanitary measures applied by members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) under the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (the SPS Agreement). Australia has been a WTO member since 1995. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a multilateral treaty for international cooperation in plant protection. Australia is a member or ‘contracting party’ to the treaty. As for all other ISPMs, the Secretariat to the IPPC coordinated the development and preparation of ISPM 15 over a period of time through an agreed and defined process of draft development and country consultation. ISPMs are created to act as guidelines to help establish harmonious Phytosanitary measures in international trade. How can you tell if WPM has been treated? All treated WPM will have the IPPC mark,

The markings must be within a rectangular border with a vertical line separating the IPPC logo (on the left) from the identifying data. The border lines may be solid or broken; and the corners may be rounded.

IPPC Certification symbol.

000: represents the unique certification number issued by AQIS to the treatment provider or wood packaging manufacturer. Inclusion of this certification number ensures that the wood packaging material can be traced back to the treatment provider and/or manufacturer.

YY – This indicates the type of treatment, and will either be HT (Heat Treatment) or MB (Methyl Bromide). The marking ‘DB’ (indicating debarking has taken place) is no longer used. However, as pallets may last several years, the older style of ISPM15 marking is still permissible.

A pest is an organism which has characteristics that are observed by individual as harmful or unwanted. An animal can also be a pest when it causes harm to a natural ecosystem or carry microorganisms within human environment.

General Pest Control or GPC consist of the management of all urban pests eliminating termites. While this may mean dealing with all vertebrate and invertebrate pests, most pest problems are usually caused by five types of pests in the urban environment:

1.cockroaches (German and American cockroaches)

2.flies (house flies and blow flies)

3.rodents (rats and mice)

4.mosquitoes (especially Aedes aegypti)

5.ants

Invertebrate pests

Crawling insects – cockroaches, ants, bedbugs, and variety of pests

Flying insects – a variety of flies, mosquitoes, moths and others that are frequently seen flying in houses and buildings

Mouse and rat control products are effective and fall into two different categories – baits and traps.

Baits are available in the amount of set-up including meal, grains, pellets and blocks. Baits should be used in low passage, hard-to-reach spot such as subterranean vault, garage and upper floor. Baits are the best way to evade contact with rodents, because once they’ve eaten the bait, they leave the area to die, normally going outside to seek water. Baits are safe and very effective if used according to directions.

Traps are ideal for elevated traffic spot. Three types of traps are used commercially: snap traps, glue traps and live traps.
